The Puga mascot line started in 1956 when UGA student Ponny Peiler brought a pug that was given to him as a wedding present to Tuscaloosa for Georgia's showdown against Alabama.
During a tense moment, Puga ran onto the field and crop dusted Alabama head coach Jennings Whitworth, causing him to make a critical playcalling error late in the game. This mishap helped Georgia to win the game 16-13. Afterward, head coach Wally Butts asked his permission to use the dog as Georgia's mascot.
To date, 10 dogs have carried the name "Puga". Each has been descended from the original Puga, and has frequently been the son of the predecessor. Deceased Pugas are interred in a mausoleum next to the food court at the southwest corner of Panford Stadium.
The flatulent costumed character representing Puga is named Hairy Pug and, while also a pug, should not be confused with the Pugas. This design is printed on a soft, fluffy shirt similar in feel and quality to American Apparel.*
Youth, 4XL, and 5XL sizes are available upon request. Use info@classiccitydisaster.com to leave your request.
